There is really no reason to choose the original over the Shindou release. And in case of Mario 64, unless you're a speedrunner or want to break the game easily. Appreciate it for its quirks and what it did for the industry, or just move on.Ĭlick to shrink. When you re-release an old game, you would preferably using the newest version of said game to ensure there is the least amount of bugs to begin with. making it an odyssey clone just kinda devalues that. It’s an special game for its time, with all of its quirks. In 3D all stars, or as it’s own $60 remake (because we definitely know if they went the remake route that’s likely what they would’ve done).
There’s no reason for Nintendo to expend effort to massively update 64s visuals, and reinvent its camera and controls.
The next 3D Mario with inventive mechanics that continue to push the series forward is a guarantee, why prolong that for a limiting remake lol. This isn’t crash where they’re selling remakes to try and reignite interest in a dead series. Neat let me go back to odyssey”Īnd if that’s NOT what you want from a 64 remake, as in you DO want them to change the level design and gameplay, then it begs the question - why not just wait for a new game lol. If they did remake it I’d actually be as bold as to predict it wouldn’t really please anyone beyond an initial “oh cool!” - those who love the original love it for all its quirks and it can’t really be replaced, those who are new to it would go “okayyy…. You’re left with a pretty game that’s rendered obsolete due to how far 3D Mario has come.
It’s not like FF7 where people want the story told on modern tech, where SE is free to change up the gameplay and level design to be modern.Īsking Nintendo for a 64 remake is akin to asking them to give an aged game a graphical facelift and trying to sell it on par with something like odyssey which completely dwarfs it in terms of scope, level design, gameplay variety etc. It would be a complete waste of energy outside of pandering to nostalgia.ģD Mario is a gameplay and level design first game.
It's left me with a game that I find a struggle to go back to, instead of the joy it should be.Īlso, It may not be asked for in this thread But this thread did remind me because it comes up in 3D all stars discussions, but I seriously don’t get the demands for a 64 remake. That Nintendo themselves couldn't bother even adding the slightest of QOL improvements just sucks.
We had fan ports of the game to PC adding a fully controllable modern camera system, widescreen rendering, higher framerates, and so so so much more. I get the limitations they were working with at the time and the new ground they were breaking, I was there to experience it first hand, but where it gets to me is how little effort Nintendo put into this package. The draw distance is another pain, especially when trying to hunt for the 100 coin stars while the coins themselves disappear if they're farther than 15 feet away.Īll of this isn't really meant to be an condemnation of Mario 64.
This isn't helped with how fiddly Mario himself is to control, where he'll get caught on edges and rapidly stutter in a state of falling and landing, or make wide turns when you want to go the other direction. If you do try to adjust the camera, it is constantly fighting you and often just not looking where you want, leaving you with awkward angles to judge distances with. Even if you're not touching it the camera likes to constantly sway, requiring constant microadjustments to not make swerves in my movement. Playing through it now on the Switch has me frustrated. Playing modern Mario releases had made me forget just how 64 controlled and functioned, and just how utterly miserable simple navigation can be when the camera system fights you every step of the way. I had a strong fondness for it in my memories, the wonder of exploring the worlds, the abstract art design, the sandbox nature of level progression. Mario 64 was one of if not the first 3D game I had played, but I never picked up any of the re-releases until this. I picked up 3D All-Stars because I hadn't played Sunshine before, and having Galaxy and Mario 64 on a modern system would be nice.
